The collision happened as four vehicles were moving eastbound on Interstate 270, in the first lane. Due to traffic congestion ahead, the drivers of the first and second vehicles slowed down and stopped. The third driver applied the brakes but could not stop in time, causing the front of the third vehicle to hit the rear of the second vehicle. The fourth driver also applied the brakes but was unable to stop in time, leading to the front of the fourth vehicle hitting the rear of the third vehicle. The impact pushed the second vehicle forward, causing its front to hit the rear of the first vehicle. The St Louis County Police Department assisted at the scene.
